Explore how yoga deepens the journey of awareness

and informs our desire for collective liberation.

 

The tradition of yoga, as relevant today as it was 5,000 years ago, offers us a vast window into the nature of suffering, healing, and transformation.  During this retreat we’ll look at the relationship between movement and stillness, will and surrender, freedom and suffering.  We’ll observe what the physical body is capable of holding and releasing.  We’ll sit with the workings of the mind as it wanders between various places of concentration.   And we will see how softening in the body, heart and mind opens us to greater understanding of internal and external realities.

The weekend will include:

~asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breath work) and meditation

~teachings from the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras

~discussion and individual reflection

~optional day of practice from 10 a.m – 4 p.m. on October 1, including periods of meditation and yoga plus lunch.

The retreat is appropriate for practitioners at all experience levels.

Claudia Horwitz is the director of stone circles and The Stone House.  She works at the intersection of practice, community experience, and social change. Her previous work includes developing youth leadership, supporting struggles for economic justice, and strengthening social change organizations. She has been practicing yoga for 12 years and teaching for 8.  She is trained as a Kripalu yoga teacher, has studied yoga in India, and practices a yogic path of awareness on and off the mat.

Michelle Johnson completed 200 hours of Power Yoga Teacher training in the Baptiste tradition at Franklin Street Yoga, instructed by Lori Burgwyn. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Michelle believes yoga is a gift of life, breath, spirit, love, and soulfulness and that it offers people the opportunity to learn how to breathe in their own time and way. She teaches at Carrboro Yoga Company, Franklin Street Yoga, Hilllsborough Yoga and Healing Arts, and maintains a private therapy practice, trains and consults with Dismantling Racism Works, and directs Heirs to a Fighting Tradition (www.heirsproject.org).
